What is i-Ready Math?
i-Ready Math is an online program used by our elementary buildings to help your child work on math activities at their level. i-Ready Personalized Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and needs. These lessons are fun and interactive to keep your students engaged as they learn. Students follow the activities in their iReady “My Path” as they are assigned to them due to their i-Ready diagnostic test.
This is a great program to have your child work in at home if you have a home device and an internet
connection. Our mathematics program we use at school is called Bridges Mathematics and this program is
what your child will be instructed in at school daily. iReady is an additional online program for students to work on at home to help students fill gaps in their learning due to any COVID-19 learning losses. Students access iReady through a program called Clever. The Clever URL is linked here. They use their email address and password to log into Clever. They have the iReady app to click on once logged into Clever. Please contact your child’s teacher if you need assistance with login information.

Service Academy Night - October 15
Representative Hillary Scholten’s District Office is excited to invite our students to the upcoming Service Academy Night on October 15, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Gerald R. Ford Museum. This event is a fantastic opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the military through one of the United States Service Academies.
Representatives from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will be present to provide information, answer questions, and discuss the application process. This is an invaluable chance for students to learn more about these prestigious institutions and the opportunities they offer.
Now Accepting Service Academy Applications
Congresswoman Scholten is now accepting United States service academy nomination applications. We encourage high school students in our district (MI-03) to apply for these prestigious appointments.
Each year, members of Congress may nominate a limited number of candidates to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. These nominations are highly competitive, and students must meet strict eligibility requirements to be considered.
The application process involves submitting materials such as academic transcripts, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and essay questions. The deadline to submit a completed application to our office is November 1, 2024. Please visit Congresswoman Scholten's website for more information on the process and to access the application packet. Please share this information with your students and their families and encourage those interested to attend the Service Academy Night to learn more. Feel free to print and post the attached flyer at your school. If have any questions or need additional details about the event or the nomination process, please do not hesitate to reach out. You may contact me by email at Bradley.Stek@mail.house.gov or by phone at 616-451-8383.

Attendance
The county-wide Strive for 5 is still our goal for every student. Students with excessive chargeable absences will not be allowed to attend dances and/or other extracurricular activities. Please refer to the Student handbook for more information as to which kind of absences count against them. Students over 5 minutes late to class other than their first hour are considered absent. The rest of our attendance policy can be found in our student handbook.
If your student is going to be absent, late, or needs to leave early, please call the attendance line at 616-784-2400 Ext. 2 or you can email at hsattendance@khps.org. Food Service Changes
We are excited to share that KHPS will be participating in the MI School Meals Program and will be offering breakfast and lunch to all students at NO COST starting this fall. Although meals are free, we encourage all families to complete the Education Benefit Form found here. You may be entitled to additional benefits.
6th Grade Camp Wrap Up
6th Grade Camp was an incredible success! The weather was beautiful. The kids were very engaged in activities and well-behaved overall. We frequently noticed how students supported each other, challenged themselves, and used their manners to thank each other and adults. We are so appreciative of our parent chaperones! They were rock stars! We did have a few miscellaneous items left behind after students picked up luggage yesterday. We placed those items in the office. Please pick them up if they are your child's belongings. Finally, if you did not pick up your child's meds/med bottles, the nurse has those items for parent pick-up as well.
The Student Council
The KHMS student council is partnering with Kids' Food Basket for Brown Bag Decorating Month that runs now through October 31st. Kids' Food Basket is a local nonprofit organization that provides students in need with sack dinners. It brings more joy when the bags are decorated. This is how you can help! Students can get brown bags from their Connect teacher. Any student that would like to decorate some at home can get more from Mrs. Haines. Please decorate both sides using markers, crayons, or colored pencils. Please keep messages appropriate and avoid anything religious or political. Thanks for your support of a great organization that helps so many area kids.

Johnston is passionate about fostering a caring and supportive environment for students, staff, and families. Her deep connection to the classroom and commitment to instructional leadership will be key in her approach as principal. "I'm excited to continue supporting our teachers and students in this new role," Johnston shared. "I’m committed to ensuring that every child feels valued and supported, and I want parents to know that we are here to partner with them in helping their kids grow—academically and socially."
Kenowa Hills Superintendent Gerald Hopkins expressed enthusiasm about Johnston’s appointment, noting, "Brooke’s dedication to building strong relationships and her ability to mentor and support her staff will make a significant impact at Zinser Elementary. We are confident that she will continue to enhance the school’s culture of care and learning."
Johnston looks forward to maintaining her hands-on approach with students and teachers while building new systems to support academic growth. "I want every student to feel successful and find their passion, just as I did when I knew I wanted to be a teacher in first grade," she said. "It’s a big responsibility, but together, our community can help guide these students toward their futures."
"I'm humbled and excited to be a Knight and do what I can to support this community," Dodge shared. "I'm here to support students, and I'm very confident in my staff who are already wrapping their arms around them. At the end of the day, I want parents to know their kids are going to be seen and inspired—no matter what."
Kenowa Hills Superintendent Gerald Hopkins expressed confidence in Dodge's ability to lead the middle school. "Mike’s commitment to supporting both students and staff, combined with his experience in innovative educational practices, makes him an excellent fit for Kenowa Hills Middle School. I look forward with great confidence in the impact he will make."
Dodge aims to build on the great work already happening at the
middle school while working with his staff to continuously improve systems of
support and academic rigor for students. He is eager to immerse himself in the
Kenowa Hills community and continue fostering a positive and collaborative
environment for all. "It’s not about me; it’s about supporting the people
who are doing the work throughout our hallways. If we’re making progress,
that’s what truly matters."
"A piece of my heart will always be with Zinser, but I'm excited to dive into this new role fully," Willick shared. "Success to me is about supporting and inspiring our coaches, helping them lead with a growth mindset, and creating the best possible experience for our student-athletes and the greater Kenowa Hills community."
"Ross has a proven track record of leadership and a genuine dedication to our students' growth, both on and off the field,” said Kenowa Hills Superintendent Gerald Hopkins. “We are confident that he will continue to elevate our athletic programs and inspire our community."
Willick's vision for the athletic department centers on fostering a supportive and inspiring environment that not only nurtures student-athletes but also strengthens the community's bond with the school. He is committed to building on the positive momentum already present within the district's sports programs and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed and grow through athletics.
Ross Willick holds a deep appreciation for the role that sports play in shaping the character and resilience of students. "Athletics provides life-long lessons in adversity, teamwork, and perseverance. We aim to help our student-athletes graduate not just as better players, but as better people ready for the real world," he stated.
In her new role, Conklin is focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of the students who rely on district transportation, as well as the staff responsible for making that happen. “We play a big role in the district and the community. We can make or break a child’s day just by picking them up with a smile. For some of our kids, we might be the only adult they see after school before their families come home from work,” Conklin shared. “Safety comes first, and I’m committed to making sure our drivers are in the best mindset to care for our students.”
Conklin is also eager to build on the positive relationship the transportation staff has with the district. The recent approval of a new contract for the transportation department ensures stability and support for the team, allowing them to focus on providing safe and efficient services for the students of Kenowa Hills.
Kenowa Hills Superintendent Gerald Hopkins noted, "Val’s dedication to safety and her experience in school transportation will help us continue to provide exceptional service for our students and families. We look forward to Val’s direction, continuously improving processes and keeping the safety of our students at the forefront of our work."
“Safety comes first for our kids and our employees. I make sure
I see every one of my drivers every day to ensure our team is ready to make a
difference,” shared Conklin. “I love my job, and I love kids. Every day is a
new day, and I greatly appreciate our community’s trust they have instilled in
me to make each one special for their children.”
Note from the Principal
Welcome back! The 2024-2025 school year is off to a great start. I want to start by saying thank you to all our families who attended the open house and making that event a huge success for our community. It was great to see our returning families and meet many of our new ones! We had a positive and successful 2023-24 school year and plan to continue to build upon our successes this year by focusing on building positive relationships with students and making sure they have at least one adult they have a strong connection with, utilizing best practices in reading and math to support student learning both in large group and small group settings and improving upon our systems and structures to support those students who need additional intervention.
This past week I have loved seeing the smiles on our students' faces from the start of each day until the end. Our classrooms are developing positive classroom cultures and students are doing well learning and following our classroom and school procedures. One of the joys of my job is to visit classrooms to see students learning and to engage with the children in the hallways, on the playground and in the lunchroom. I have enjoyed reconnecting with returning students and getting to know our new ones. It is such a treat to celebrate the fun of being young and learning together.
As we settle into the school year, I would like to encourage parents to be mindful of the amount of screen time their child has as well as the importance of reading at home each night for at least twenty minutes. In addition, it is important to remember that students may tire quickly at this time of the school year as they come off of summer break and have to adjust to the rigor of our seven-hour school day. In order to assist your child with being well-rested, it is essential that they have routines at home that allow them to receive a sufficient amount of rest for their developmental age.
Every other week you should receive a similar update from me that includes our building newsletter called “Alpine’s Announcements”. Please take the time to review these newsletters as they often provide information about upcoming events, opportunities to help out at school, and situations that could use your attention. I certainly hope your children have shared some positive things about the first week of school. Should you have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher with classroom items, our Transportation Department with bus items, or the office with building wide items.

Jason Snyder

Notes From HealthBar:
This month we will be focusing on mental health overall. Our mental health is something that we all need to actively work on and if it is put on the back burner problems will quickly develop. Here are some things you can do for daily mental health maintenance:
1. Get plenty of sleep
2. Notice and take the time to enjoy the small things
3. Exercise
4. Eat healthy
5. Cut back on social media and disconnect
6. Get outside in nature
7. Connect with family and friends
Attached is a mental health fact sheet for children and teens. Facts Sheet
Attendance:
Our start time is 7:45am! We need your help getting students here on time! Any students arriving 10 minutes after class starts without an excused call/absence will be marked unexcused for the class (not a tardy). Please call the absence line 616-785-3225 or email, msattendance@khps.org. Please call ahead if your student/s need to leave early. We need to limit interruptions into the classroom. Please call in the morning and leave a message if needed, so a pass can be written. Students may not leave class without permission from the office.
Updated Attendance Policy for 2023-2024: All absences count toward attendance numbers, the only exception will be hospital stays. These are some changes we want to highlight:
Athletics Participation & Attendance: Athletes must be in school for the entire day in order to be eligible to compete in a scheduled practice or athletic event. In extreme situations, arrangements must be made with the Athletic Director and/or the Building Principal to acquire an excused absence. Scheduled appointments and funerals are an acceptable reason to be pre-excused. A medical/scheduled appointment note must be given to the athletic office if the appointment is during the scheduled school day.
